Transforming Maternal Healthcare: A Rotary Success Story

18 October 2026

Every mother deserves access to safe, reliable healthcare, and every newborn deserves the best possible start in life. With this vision in mind, a major initiative was undertaken to modernise the maternity facilities at Health Centre III, transforming the centre into a better-equipped and more welcoming environment for mothers and their babies. Made possible through the generosity and collaboration of Rotary clubs, community organisations and individual supporters from around the world, the project demonstrates the extraordinary impact that international partnerships can have on local healthcare. The Rotary Club of Albert Park in Australia was the project's key sponsor and supporter, with further contributions from the ReSemble Initiative, Rotary clubs in Uganda, and the Rotary Club of Edmonton Glenora in Canada, alongside other dedicated supporters.

The improvements have been extensive, providing the health centre with modern maternity facilities, essential infrastructure and more reliable access to critical services. A new maternity ward has been established with facilities designed to support mothers throughout pregnancy, childbirth and recovery. A powerful solar energy system now provides electricity for essential medical equipment, helping ensure that healthcare services can continue even when conventional power supplies are unreliable. A new water system, capable of pumping up to 10,000 litres in just five hours, provides another vital resource for maintaining hygiene, sanitation and safe medical care. Additional accommodation and amenities have also been constructed, contributing to the overall improvement of the facility.

The results are already making a measurable difference in the community. Comparing equivalent six-month periods before and after the improvements, attendance for maternal health services increased from approximately 500 to 580 visits, representing a 16% rise. The number of mothers attending the facility for childbirth grew from 100 to approximately 160, an impressive 60% increase. Perhaps most significantly, postnatal attendance increased from 68 to approximately 162, representing growth of more than 138%. These figures demonstrate growing use of the upgraded facilities and suggest increasing community confidence in the healthcare services available. More mothers are now accessing important care during pregnancy, childbirth and the critical weeks following delivery.

While these achievements represent a significant milestone, the work is not yet complete. Additional medical equipment is still needed for the laboratory and operating theatre to further strengthen the centre's ability to provide comprehensive healthcare. Encouragingly, district administrators have expressed confidence in the facility's ongoing maintenance and future potential. The project stands as a powerful example of Rotary's commitment to Service Above Self, bringing together people and organisations across international borders to deliver practical, lasting improvements in people's lives. With continued community involvement and donor support, Health Centre III can build upon these achievements, helping more mothers receive the care they need and giving more babies a healthy start in life. Every contribution helps bring that vision closer to reality.
